EMERGENCIES What To Do In A Dental Emergency

Although dental emergencies can be uncommon, it is still important to have a course of action in place when these issues arise. Read below to learn more about some of the more common types of dental emergencies. If you or your family member experience any of these cases, do not hesitate to reach out to our office to schedule an appointment.

  • Toothache

Not all toothaches are indicative of a dental emergency, but it is important to watch for any signs of it worsening. If you notice any swelling in your face and jaw, schedule an appointment with an emergency dentist as soon as possible.

  • Chipped or Broken Tooth

There are several things that can lead to a chipped tooth. This includes playing sports, biting into hard or crunchy foods, or even a clumsy accident. If you experience a broken tooth and aren’t sure what to do, contact our dentists to receive high-quality emergency dental care.

  • Knocked-Out Tooth

Just like with a broken or chipped tooth, accidents can happen when you least expect. Having a tooth knocked out can be severe and it is important to see your dentist as soon as possible. Be sure to rinse off the root of the tooth if it has any dirt or debris, and place the tooth in a glass of milk to preserve it for the restoration process.

  • Lost Filling or Crown

When a filling or crown is lost, there is an increased risk of infection or further damage to the affected tooth. For this reason, you will want to schedule an emergency appointment right away. In the time between losing the crown or filling and seeing a dentist, you will want to make an effort to keep the tooth clean by avoiding eating or chewing in that area of the mouth.

  • Abscess

A tooth abscess is a small pocket of pus that can be seen pushing out of a swollen gum. This bacterial infection is typically caused by a cavity that hasn’t been treated, an injury, or previous dental work. If you are experiencing pain and can locate a swollen area in the gums, you may need to see an emergency dentist.

While dental emergencies are rare, if a traumatic event
occurs contact any of our offices
as soon as possible.
In these situations, X-rays are often necessary to determine
the extent of the injury or incident
and to determine the proper methods of
treatment for your particular case.
